Item # N43003   Price: $7.95Quantity:

Significantly enhancing the warfighting capability of the U.S. Navy, submarines have served as a critical component of America's military strength for more than a century.

As America's first submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1) revolutionized the U.S. Navy fleet and contributed greatly to the advancement of marine technology. Built according to the innovative design of one of America's true pioneers and patriots, John P. Holland, the boat was commissioned on October 12, 1900.

Measuring nearly sixty- four feet in length and with a total displacement of sixty-four tons, the USS Holland was capable of sustaining submersion for several hours at a time. Featuring an advanced propulsion system, it served as a model for subsequent submarine building projects.

Created in 2001, this coin was struck to commemorate the U.S. Navy's one-hundredth year of submarine service. This coin celebrates John Holland's innovation and foresight and salutes the Navy's proud submarine tradition. This coin is minted in a brass alloy and finished in antique bronze.

The obverse depicts a bust of John Holland displayed above a rendering of his famous invention. The reverse features the dolphin seal of the U.S. Navy Submarine Service minted above the words: "Pride Runs Deep."
